The system presented for the creation of an adventurer is meant to adhere to two main goals in regards to mechanics: A general following of the intended levels of game balance, and the freedom to create a wide array of characters and concepts.
This is best represented in the suggested method for determining the ability scores of your adventurer. Modifier point assignment. This method has you select a starting set of ability modifiers, the most impactful selection of statistics for your character, in a manner that supports balance between party members. The maximum bonus available at level one is chosen based on the total intended modifiers to die rolls for a starting character. At level one this means a general intent of a maximum of +5 to any given roll you make. Three points of this can come from your ability modifier and two points from your starting proficiency.
